Gettin’ Sauced Southern Style (Part 2)

Our second part to gettin’ sauced Southern style, is the classic Mint Julep.  It is cooling, with a balance between sweetness and bourbon burn.  It is the perfect Southern drink.  The Mint Julep originated in the Southern United States and is usually associated with the Kentucky Derby.  We definitely enjoy them during the summer.  The trick is to not make them too sweet and let the bourbon shine through.

Buy It!

2 ounces quality bourbon
Mint leaves
1/2 ounce mint infused simple syrup

Make It!

In a small pot, make simple syrup with 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup sugar over medium heat.  Remove from heat and drop in about 7-8 mint leaves.  Place syrup in fridge until cold.  In a rocks glass or highball glass, muddle 3-4 mint leaves and a drop of bourbon.  Heap glass with crushed ice and add a little under a half ounce of the simple syrup.  Pour bourbon over ice and garnish with a mint sprig.  Enjoy!
